HP’s CES offering isn’t only concerned with convertibles for socially distanced high-end business users. One of the best consumer laptops around is also getting a refresh in the form of the 2021 HP Envy 14, and it looks set to rival Apple's MacBook Pro line.
Described by the company as a “mobile personal creative studio”, the HP Envy 14 comes with a 16:10 1,920 x 1,200 IPS touchscreen to boost the viewing area compared to more conventional 16:9 displays. Pushing its creative credentials, HP claims that the display features colour calibration with a Delta E of 2 for “colour accuracy out of the box” but this can be further tailored by the built-in HP Display Control software.
Powered by the latest 11th-generation Intel Core processors, intriguingly the HP Envy should allow for a decent amount of gaming with the right configuration. HP says that the laptop can be configured to include a GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q GPU, which is quite capable of running most games, should you be happy to drop the detail a little bit.

To the eyes of HP, the Envy would make for a great alternative to the MacBook Pro 16. During the announcement, the OEM directly compared its upcoming Envy 15 to the 2019 MacBook Pro 16 to show off.
But it’s mainly about productivity, with HP talking up the Envy 14’s potential for these socially distanced times. The 16.5-hour battery life is accompanied by quality-of-life enhancement for remote workers liable to be dragged into Zoom meetings at a moment’s notice: AI Noise Removal will intelligently cut out background noise during calls, with a dedicated microphone mute button and physical shutter for the webcam when you want to be invisible. HP also says it shouldn’t get too hot, no matter what you put it through in a day, thanks to its IR thermopile sensor.

At 1.6kg, it isn't the most portable of ultraportables, but HP will be banking on its extra wide screen and powerful innards doing the talking. The HP Envy 14 will arrive in February, priced between £1,000 and £1,400 depending on configurations.
